Wolf - 3 car teams would be "Inevitable" if Red Bull leave

If Dietrich Mateschitz lives up to his threat of quitting Formula 1, it will mean that the sport will lose four cars and two teams. The Head of Motorsport of Mercedes Toto Wolf believes that if this does happen, then three car teams will almost certainly come into play.
"Yes, if a team would leave, and we had this discussion about Lotus a while ago, third cars are a solution to fill up the grid,"
"For me personally it is a pretty exciting idea. I’d rather have Red Bull in the sport than third cars and a grid of 27 or 28 cars, and some exciting young drivers in those cars. But this is definitely one of the fall-back solutions."
At this moment in time, Red Bull do not have an engine for 2016, with Mercedes turning their backs on a deal and Ferrari appear to be only offering a 'Compromised' engine. With that said, F1 would only lose two seats next year if both Red Bull and Toro Rosso were to pull out, as Haas will be making their eagerly awaited debut.

Luckily he does not run f1. Three mercs on the podium, pfff so boring. Nope we need more competitive racing, not supplying your engine so you have a better change of staying on top doesn't help. Feels a bit rich for him to talk about bettering the sport.

Only boring if they go from start to finish in a procession. If there are fights etc NP.

Out of a possible 28 podiums they managed 23. Looks like they are dominant only a few races they had an issue. If they were to supply three cars than the championship would be a joke.. Teams are per definition selfish losing rb and toro rosso can't be good for the viewing.

If worse case scenario that we had to have 3 car teams. Then I would say the 3rd car, would have to run the previous year's engine. Which might avoid the prospect of an all Mercedes Engine Podium

I feel a weight penalty system could be a good idea in F1: teams winning multiple races get slight weight added to the cars (or fuel flow is restricted to simulate increased weight), thus allowing competition to catch up. I dont feel it should have a major impact, but anything would help, I feel.
