Hyper soft tyre "about a second per lap faster" than ultra soft

Pirelli has said that initial testing suggests that the pink-walled hyper soft tyre that will be introduced next season is about a second per lap faster than the ultra soft. The ultra soft was brought into the sport in 2016, while the hyper soft will replace it next year as the softest compound.
Pirelli has been gathering data at the Yas Marina Circuit on Tuesday and Wednesday, with all teams participating in the test. Mario Isola, Head of Car Racing at Pirelli, admitted that the information the Italian marque has received has been very positive.
"The characteristics of the Yas Marina Circuit meant the test concentrated on the compounds from white medium to the pink hyper soft," Isola stated. "The whole test and all the drivers gave us very positive feedback.
"The new pink hyper soft meets our initial expectations, with times that are about a second per lap faster than the purple ultra soft, but this obviously needs to be confirmed on other types of track as well. All the 2018 tyres are a step softer than this year's equivalents, in line with what the teams asked for, with the pink hyper soft being two steps softer than the 2017 ultra soft."

You couldnt just soften em all up a bit, you had to create a brand new tyre for it? You know, Pirelli, we preferred you with both your legs intact, and with less cutlery up your behind.

I find this weird as well. It's already ridiculous with all these different compounds, no need to add another one.
This comment about it being one second a lap faster really confirms that Kubica basically destroyed Stroll the other day

Yup, I can stand the ultra, but a hyper? Im all for hyper things, Hyper mode in Metroid Prime, hyper activity, hypertony from eating too many snacks.. But hyper softs in one compound too many. If anything, reduce the amount, make them good, or just bring back Michelin or Bridgestone.
As for Kubica and that tyre compound... I dont give much for the lap times, its a practice session. Im more curious about those 100 laps he set (again) and what that could say about his health. Im also more impressed if he did it with more fuel than the rest. If the tyre is as good as Pirelli says (its probably not, they are as full of shit as Marko or EA games), then thats nice. If all of that combined is true, and everyone did their fastest times, then he could certainly be a worthy member of the grid.

I would love to see Michelin or Bridgestone back in any capacity. Sadly it doesn't seem like it will happen for the foreseeable future.
He was allegedly running heavy on fuel, on softs - whereas the rest of the field supposedly were testing hypers. Not to mention that it's a completely new car to him. But like you said, practice is practice so you never know.

Yeah, wouldnt it be awesome? Bridgestone is surely outruled. They were happy with their stint in F1, and doesnt seem keen on returning. Michelin, on the other hand, is a possible candidate. Pirelli has supplied the grid for many years, and hasnt ever really nailed it with the tyres. Fans arent happy about it, and Bernie isnt in F1 anymore, so if Pirelli doesnt improve for the next couple of years, they could be out on thin ice. Michelin, on the other hand, generally has a better track record with F1 (apart from the U.S GP in what, 2006?), heck, racing in general, and has the fans on their side.
If that is the case, then its impressive. But yeah, time will tell how representative it was. As for his comment that he can compensate with the rest of his body... As a person with limited upper body movement due to pain, there is a limit to how much you can compensate with the rest of the body. The shark fins are set to vanish next years, and cars will get heavier, meaning they'll be alot heavier to steer, so Im concerned if he can truly handle it. I hope he can.

Faster for how long ? One lap ? Two ? Just stop this foolish race to the bottom with silly stunts and rules that hurt more than help F1.

Tyres as wide as top fuel drag racer or 'funny car' with no aero and we'll all be happy. There was more overtaking on the Volvo Ocean race through the Atlantic on leg 2 to Cape Town than the last F1 race.
