Inaugural British Touring Car champion Jack Sears has passed away aged 86.

Sears competed in eight rounds of the 1958 season, taking seven class wins in his Austin A105 to become the first champion in the series' history. He also won the 1963 championship, driving Ford Cortinas and a Ford Galaxie.

In 1963 he took part in the 24 Hours of Le Mans alongside Mike Salmon, who also died earlier this year. The pair took their Ferrari 330 Le Mans Berlinetta to fifth overall, third in class.

In recent years the BTCC has awarded the Jack Sears Trophy in Sears' honour.

Originally for the best performing driver in an S2000 specification car when it was introduced in 2013, the Jack Sears Trophy is now awarded to the top rookie driver over the course of the season.
