Following the conclusion of a multi-year supply agreement, Manor Marussia F1 Team will race with Mercedes-Benz Hybrid power from the 2016 season onwards. Since the introduction of the new Power Unit generation in 2014, the Mercedes-Benz Hybrid has set the competitive benchmark in the sport, claiming to date a total of 27 wins and 2,208 world championship points.
Under the terms of the agreement, Manor Marussia F1 Team will be supplied with Mercedes-Benz Power Units by Mercedes AMG High Performance Powertrains (HPP) based in Brixworth, UK. The Power Unit will use Fluid Technology Solutions developed by PETRONAS, the technology partner of Mercedes-Benz. Under the agreement, Manor Marussia F1 Team will be supplied with current-year Power Units throughout the term.

That is likely one reason. And it will provide Mercedes with a fine mini team, and a horde of benefits for Manor. We can likely expect Wehrlein to compete for Manor next year. Looks like Red Bull is set to take Ferrari engines or leave the sport. Wonder if Manor will change livery into a silver one to match the shift. I do however like that they thanked Ferrari, it seemed very appropriate to do so.

This also means that the takeover of renault is a must for LOTUS otherwise they are left without an PU.
Not impressed with mercedes however, since they will only supply teams that will not give them too much bother.
Since RB is actually a customer team I could not see the reasoning from Toto. I hope that Ferrari grants RB & STR their 2016 engine. Seems like RB are a victim of their succes. Should they have suffered another year with Renault promising improvements and not delivering. Loads of power play going on, losing 4 cars from the grid is a daunting propect.
Wasn't it toto that said that nobody cares if RB and STR are not there at the start in 2016. Would that mean 3 cars from merc. ferrari or williams. Wow the prospect of having a whole podium of merc drivers. Pff what a turnoff.
Bernie needs to put a framework together for PU suppliers. Ron Dennis is correct otherwise no customer team will be able to win a championship. I think that the horse has bolted, the framework should have been in place already. Now the PU manufacters can basically control the customers team by restricting access to their best PU.
