Nico Rosberg leads Lewis Hamilton in first practice

Nico Rosberg topped the opening practice for the German Grand Prix, leading Mercedes team mate Lewis Hamilton by just over three tenths of a second.

Rosberg set a time of 1 minute, 15.517 seconds and completed 32 laps, two more than Hamilton.

The top 10 followed a pattern of teams dobling up with Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel and Kimi Raikkonen in third and fourth, ahead of the Red Bull pairing of Max Verstappen and Daniel Ricciardo.

Fernando Alonso and McLaren team mate Jenson Button were seventh and eighth with Toro Rosso duo Daniil Kvyat and Carlos Sainz completing the top 10.

Marcus Ericsson was a strong 11th for Sauber, ahead of WIlliams drivers Valtteri Bottas and Felipe Massa.

Romain Groasjean was 14th for Haas, despite making contact with the wall. Force India had a quiet session with Nico Hulkenberg and Sergio Perez in 15th and 16.

Ferrari junior Charles Leclerc, deputising for Esteban Gutierrez at Haas, was 17th, three spots ahead of Renault reserve driver Esteban Ocon, with Kevin Magnussen and Felipe Nasr splitting the two FP1 drivers.

Rio Haryanto finished in 21st, ahead of Manor team mate Pascal Wehrlein.
