Jenson Button will make his Super GT debut later this year as the Brit has signed a deal to race with Team Mugen. On August 27, Button will join regular drivers Hideki Mutoh and Daisuke Nakajima for the Suzuka 1000km, driving a Honda NSX-GT.
"After driving an NSX Concept-GT at Honda Racing's 'Thanks Day' last December, I became interested in racing in Super GT," said Button. "I spoke with Honda and they have given me the chance to race at the Suzuka 1000km. As an F1 driver and a member of Team Mugen, I will push to win. I am very much looking forward to racing in front of my Japanese fans again."
Button retired from Formula 1 at the end of last season after 1 season in the sport, and is the second most experienced man in the sport's history, behind former teammate Rubens Barrichello. The Brit made a one-off appearance at Monaco last weekend to race with McLaren as Fernando Alonso raced in the Indy 500.
His return wasn't his most glamorous race as it ended in a collision with Pascal Wehrlein. Despite this, Button said he enjoyed his time there and hinted that he would be trying something else: "In other categories possibly, yes, but not in Formula 1," he said when asked if he would be racing again.
"I've got my own things that I'm enjoying away from the sport at the moment and I need to be fully focused on them if I want to achieve what I want to achieve."
