Lewis Hamilton admits that he would like to know how Michael Schumacher is doing following his skiing accident in 2013. Schumacher was with his family in the Alps when the accident occurred. The German was in a coma for some time before it was reported he was no longer in that state.
However, the extent of the seven-time world champion's injury has never been revealed and Schumacher has not been in the public eye since his accident. Hamilton, who surpassed his qualifying record at the weekend, wants to know how he's doing: "For everything he did for the sport and raising the bar, to be able to raise that bar once more is an honour," he said. "I would love to speak to his wife and see how things are. Time will tell."
Hamilton took the lead of the championship for the first time this year on Sunday at the Belgian Grand Prix, as he crossed the line in first followed by teammate Valtteri Bottas. Hamilton's victory meant it was the first back-to-back win of 2017, and the Brit is delighted with the result.
"This is obviously an incredibly exciting season; the last two races have been really strong for us as a team. The way things have come together in the second half of the season is exceptional. The car felt fantastic, particularly on that first stint. As we had a bit of breathing room behind us, it was easier for us to extend the life of the tyres. Valtteri did a fantastic job to get through and get this one-two. It is amazing to have the first back-to-back wins in a long, long time and claim the lead in the championship."
