McLaren admits that it is looking at the option of making junior driver Lando Norris the team's official reserve driver. The Brit joined McLaren at the start of the season as a junior, after claiming the McLaren Autosport BRDC Award.
The Brit, who is leading the 2017 FIA Formula Three European series, tested the McLaren MCL32 at the in-season test at the Hungaroring earlier this year. The 17-year-old heavily impressed the Woking squad, who have repeatedly spoken about their belief in the youngster.
Currently, Jenson Button holds the role of McLaren reserve driver, but with the 2009 world champion hoping to return to racing full-time next season, McLaren could be forced to replace him: "In my view, he wants to spend next season in a racing series, and it is obvious that we cannot offer him that," McLaren's racing director Eric Boullier said. "But he is also an ambassador of the McLaren brand, and we would be happy to continue this cooperation.
When asked if Norris is an option to replace Button, Boullier replied: "Yes. Let's see, because if he becomes F3 champion, which is quite possible, he will have enough points to receive the super license."
