Max Verstappen believes that Red Bull's new power unit is leaving it in a stronger position than 2018.
The energy drink squad is powered by Honda this year, after the team opted to end its long-standing relationship with Renault at the end of the 2018 season.
The relationship between the two had grown sour amid disappointing results, causing Red Bull to search elsewhere for an engine supplier that could provide it with what it wants.
Last Sunday in Australia, Verstappen crossed the line in third place to take Honda's first podium since it returned to the sport in 2015.
"As for the speed we had during the race, it was another good step forward compared to last year," Verstappen said.
"I'm very satisfied with the top speed, if I compare it to that of the other two top teams. In general the engine worked very well and without any problems, which is also very important. Time will tell if we can compete for the first position."
Verstappen is now on a run of six straight podiums that stretches back to last year's Japanese Grand Prix.
The 21-year-old says he didn't have to pay too much attention to the Honda power unit during the race as it ran smoothly.
"We didn't really have to pay attention to the package. However, you always have to pay attention to the tyres, because they overheat as soon as you drive behind another car. In general I am very satisfied.
"We have made good progress and there are still many positive things to come. So far we have worked very well together and I'm very happy with that. It was a good result, but of course we also have to work hard to improve."
