Josef Newgarden took his third career IndyCar victory in dominant fashion by leading a record 282 laps of the Iowa Corn 300 at Iowa Speedway.
After starting the race in second, Newgarden got past pole sitter Simon Pagenaud on the opening lap and only ever surrendered the lead during pit stops after that.
The win comes just two rounds after a heavy crash at the postponed Firestone 600 in Texas left Newgarden in hospital with a fractured clavicle and wrist.
"It was a lot of fun, mainly because the car was so good," said Newgarden, who moves up to second int he points standings after the win. "It would go anywhere, it wasn't really falling off much. It was fun. In some stints it seemed like a video game. You put on new tires, you catch people at the right point and you could just slice and dice."
"If you have as good of a car as I had today, it makes your race so much easier to drive," he added. "I don't think people should feel like I did some crazy feat. The hand is still a little broken. I was able to use it; it wasn't too painful. The clavicle feels good with the plate in, was stable. It was a little more uncomfortable than normal around here, but it was doable."
Penske driver WIll Power finished the race in second place, 4.2 seconds adrift of Newgarden, with Scott Dixon in third - his 88th career podium. Pagenaud and Mikhail Aleshin rounded out the top five.
Former Formula One drivers Alexander Rossi, Sebastien Bourdais, Takuma Sato, Max Chilton, and Juan Pablo Montoya finished sixth, eighth, 11th, 19th and 20th respectively.
Serralles takes Lights honours
Puerto Rican Felix Serralles took his second win of the season after passing Zach Veach on the penultimate lap for victory in Iowa. Championship leader Ed Jones finished in third.
