Bescheidenheid siert de mens, en kenmerkt het vernieuwde Ferrari. De Scuderia onderging vorig jaar en afgelopen winter een grondige reorganisatie. Het nieuwe management ziet de realiteit onder ogen en trapt niet in de valkuil om hoog van te toren te blazen. Ferrari moet van de grond opnieuw opgebouwd worden en dat gaat gepaard met een voorzichtige houding.

Het zou al een wonder zijn als Ferrari bij de seizoensopener in Australië op het podium eindigt. Dat gevoel overheerst bij de renstal zelf, wist Leo Turrini op zijn blog te melden. Daarmee breekt de Scuderia opzichtig met het verleden. De afgelopen jaren schalden de meest ambitieuze teksten vanuit Maranello. Alleen kon men die woorden nimmer waarmaken.

De ambities zijn gebleven, maar het misplaatste zelfvertrouwen is verdwenen. Ferrari heeft de grote schare tifosi al vaak genoeg teleurgesteld. Onder aanvoering van Sergio Marchionne en Maurizio Arrivabene is een nieuwe koers uitgestippeld. De teamleiding predikt realisme. Domineren is nog altijd het doel, maar het besef dat zoiets tijd vergt is doorgedrongen tot de Scuderia.

Het klinkt voor de fans van Ferrari misschien als vloeken in de kerk, maar de eerste helft van het komende seizoen is min of meer al opgegeven. Elke podiumplek beschouwt de Scuderia als mooi meegenomen, met beide wagens in de top tien kwalificeren en finishen is het doel. Om dan vanaf halverwege het jaar grote sprongen voorwaarts te maken.

De tifosi zullen dus nog even door de zure appel heen moeten bijten. Het bolwerk Ferrari is op sportief vlak de voorbije jaren afgebrokkeld, met 2014 als voorlopig dieptepunt. De fouten die gemaakt zijn met het ontwerp van zowel de bolide als de aandrijflijn zijn niet zomaar te rectificeren. Een voordeel is dat het nauwelijks slechter kan dan vorig jaar.

Het is natuurlijk nog maar de vraag of de aanpak van de nieuwe leiding aanslaat. Ze verdienen in elk geval de tijd en de kans om Ferrari weer de sportieve glans te geven die bij de Italiaanse renstal hoort. Officieel zal de Scuderia nooit toegeven dat ze een tussenjaar tegemoet gaan, maar alles wijst erop dat 2015 het jaar van de wederopbouw is.
