De muziek draait bij Renault F1 Team, er zijn twee stoeltjes vrij en daar dansen een stuk of vijf, zes coureurs omheen. Het kunnen er ook elf zijn, volgens teambaas Frederic Vasseur. Zodra de muziek stopt zullen de kandidaten over elkaar heen duikelen om een zitje te bemachtigen. Een stoelendans van jewelste is momenteel gaande bij Renault.

Nico Hülkenberg heeft op dit moment de beste papieren om in elk geval een van de zitjes te bemachtigen. Opmerkelijk, aangezien Renault eerder nog achter diens teamgenoot Sergio Perez aanzat. Dat kan zijn omdat ze dachten dat Hülkenberg in bezit was van een doorlopend contract. Het kan ook zijn dat Perez gewoon hoger op het lijstje stond dan Hülkenberg en dat ze na het afzeggen van de Mexicaan voor de tweede keus moeten gaan.

Hoe dan ook, Hülkenberg staat wel open voor een overgang naar Renault. Het belangrijkste lokmiddel van de Franse renstal is een driejarig contract. Dat biedt zekerheid voor de langere termijn en dat telt voor Hülkenberg. De Duitser heeft nog geen gelukkige hand gehad bij zijn keuzes voor teams. Bijna overal waar hij kwam waren er betalingsproblemen.

Voor 2013 verkaste hij van Force India naar Sauber omdat de Indiase renstal hem nog geld verschuldigd was. Later dat jaar kon ook Sauber zijn salaris niet meer ophoesten. Hülkenberg zou nu onder een overeenkomst bij Force India uit kunnen omdat zijn werkgever enkele betalingsafspraken niet is nagekomen. Dat maakt de weg vrij voor Renault.

De Franse renstal is op zoek naar een coureur met ervaring. Naast Hülkenberg behoorden ook Valtteri Bottas en Carlos Sainz tot de kandidaten, maar die zijn allebei niet beschikbaar. Naast Hülkenberg wil Renault het liefst een Fransman of een groot talent. Esteban Ocon voldoet aan beide omschrijvingen, maar hij is verbonden aan Mercedes. Daardoor zijn ook Pierre Gasly en Jean-Eric Vergne in beeld als alternatieven.

Resteert de vraag waarom Hülkenberg het solide Force India zou verruilen voor een team dat dit jaar in de achterhoede bivakkeert. Het antwoord is deels al gegeven. Renault biedt hem een baangarantie en bovendien is het een fabrieksteam. Gesteund door een automerk beschikt het team over meer financiële daadkracht dan Force India, waarvan eigenaar Vijay Mallya niet meer kan reizen omdat de Indiase overheid zijn paspoort in heeft laten trekken.

Mallya staat in India terecht vanwege openstaande schulden na het faillissement van zijn vliegmaatschappij Kingfisher Airlines. Subrata Roy, mede-eigenaar van Force India, zit al vast wegens corruptie. Nee, dan Renault. Dat heeft een belabberd 2016 achter de rug met een voor de Mercedes-motor ontworpen auto. Dat de eigen motor zo slecht niet meer is, bewijst Red Bull Racing dit jaar wel. En Enstone heeft wel vaker topwagens geproduceerd.

Renault weet daar alles van, met wereldtitels in 2005 en 2006. Die auto's kwamen ook tot stand in Enstone. Lotus boekte eveneens een paar Grand Prix-zeges met Kimi Raikkonen, voordat alle financiële perikelen begonnen. Combineer dat met een langdurige verbintenis en een werkgever die zijn afspraken (waarschijnlijk) wel naleeft, dan is de conclusie snel getrokken. Hülkenberg is beter af bij Renault dan bij Force India.

  Ik hoop het, lijkt me leuk, denk ook echt dat als Renault de schouders eronder zet ze binnen 3 jaar weer competitief kunnen zijn.

Ik zou het toejuichen met bijvoorbeeld Ocon of Sainz naast hem. Perez wacht waarschijnlijk op Ferrari.

Als ze bij Renaul de organisatie goed op orde krijgen, door nog wat geschikte mensen aan te trekken, dan zit je daar als coureur uiteindelijk beter als bij FI. Ik hoop dat Hulk naar Renault gaat, en dat hij daar nog mooie dingen kan laten zien. Hij is toch zeker 1 van de symphatiekste coureurs in de F1.

Ik ben benieuwd. Het is hem in ieder geval gegund om te rijden bij een fabrieksteam. Kan hij eindelijk zijn talent laten zien. Tenminste dat hoop ik dan.

Ik gun het Hulkenberg heel erg. Renault maakt met Hulkenberg een erg goede keuze en Hulkenberg is naast een bekwame coureur ook een hele aardige gozer. Zet Hulkenberg dan maar in die Renault en ik hoop dat hij volgend jaar de pannen van het dak daar gaat rijden.

Ik gun het hem oprecht. Ik denk dat Ocon een kanshebber is op het andere stoeltje. Dat is een groot talent.

Wie weet komt Fernando ook terug? Daar werd ie 2x WK bij en daarna was het voor hem een beetje een sukkelweg... spijtig want hij behoort tot de absolute top!

Hulkenberg is een goede keus voor Renault en Renault voor de Hulk. Ik gun het hem van harte want naast dat hij goed is is hij ook sympathiek. Ik zou het ook leuk vinden wanneer Vergne nog een kans krijgt, ik vind het iemand die qua talent gewoon thuis hoort in de F1.

Een heel klein beetje vind ik het toch spijtig dat Stoffel niet naar Renault (kon ,wilde, mocht ?) gaan. Denk dat hij daar met een 3 jarig contract wel goed op zijn plaats was.
