Column: De laatste kans voor Nico Hülkenberg

De kogel ging vorige week door de kerk; Nico Hülkenberg neemt na dit seizoen afscheid van Force India en gaat zijn geluk beproeven bij het team van Renault. De Duitser gaat voor zijn kans bij het fabrieksteam van het Franse automerk. Hij is zijn laatste kans om nog net dat beetje meer uit zijn Formule 1-loopbaan te halen dan hij tot nu toe heeft gedaan.

Hülkenberg bestormde de koningsklasse van de autosport namelijk als grote belofte. De Duitser veroverde titels in de Formule BMW, A1 Grand Prix, Formule 3 Euroseries en de GP2 en hij won de Masters op Zandvoort een keer. Ook wist hij tijdens zijn periode in de Formule 1 bij een uitstapje naar het World Endurance Championship in 2015 de 24 uur van Le Mans op zijn naam te schrijven.

Die successen heeft hij in de Formule 1 nooit geëvenaard. De teller staat na 111 Grand Prix-starts op één pole position, behaald in zijn debuutjaar bij Williams in 2010. Hülkenberg stond nog nooit op het podium in de Formule 1, in tegenstelling tot bijvoorbeeld teamgenoot Sergio Perez. Dat steekt, want hij voelt zich niets minder dan de Mexicaan.

Hülkenberg heeft eieren voor zijn geld gekozen. Hij zit op zich prima bij Force India en op basis van de stand in het kampioenschap gaat hij er nu op achteruit. Force India staat immers vierde, terwijl Renault alleen Manor en Sauber achter zich weet te houden. Echter, van Force India valt niet te verwachten dat het ooit een aanval op de huidige top drie kan doen.

Voor het fabrieksteam van Renault moet dat wel mogelijk zijn. De Franse renstal heeft een zwak seizoen achter de rug, maar daar zijn ook aanwijsbare oorzaken voor. De overname van Lotus F1 Team werd pas laat afgerond en daardoor rijdt Renault nu met een chassis dat is ontworpen voor de Mercedes-motor. Het kan eigenlijk alleen maar beter.

Dat moet Hülkenberg ook gedacht hebben. De 29-jarige Duitser mag eindelijk aan de slag bij een fabrieksteam en is vastberaden om Renault op sleeptouw te nemen. Een meerjarig contract waarbij hij 6 miljoen euro per jaar gaat verdienen deed de rest. Hülkenberg en Renault willen naar de top in de Formule 1 en slaan daarvoor de handen ineen.

Hülkenberg doet mij denken aan Heidfeld. Degelijke coureur, maar net niet goed genoeg voor de absolute top. Hoop voor hem dat een podium een keer lukt.

Een logische keuze. Bij FI weet hij in ieder geval zeker dat hij niet in de top mee zou kunnen. Met Renault kunnen er prima successen behaald worden in de nabije toekomst. Renault is er opgebrand successen te behalen in de F1, daarbij willen ze in de buurt blijven van hun 'partner' Red Bull ze kunnen zich niet permitteren met dezelfde motor een forse achterstand t.a.v. RedBull te hebben.

Ongelovelijk dat hij na 113 F1 races, nog nooit op het podium heeft gestaan. Hopelijk gaat dat volgend seizoen een keertje lukken voor deze sympathieke coureur.

  Het probleem is dat Hulkenberg veel constanter is dan bijvoorbeeld Perez. En dit seizoen een paar keer flink pech heeft gehad, zoals een Max voor hem die beroerd start. Perez heeft van de races dat hij plotseling piekt en een heel goed resultaat haalt. Races dat het bij Perez een keer niet loopt vallen daarentegen niet op, omdat er toch normaal gesproken minimaal 3 teams voor de Force India's horen te rijden.
  Wat dat betreft kun je Hulkenberg inderdaad, zoals OrangeArrows hieronder ook al aangeeft, vergelijken met Heidfeld. Maar er zijn zat meer van dit soort coureurs (geweest).

Tja, als je uit Emmerik komt, dan wil je daar zo graag vandaan dat je vanzelf wel leert heel erg snel te rijden.

Ik mag Hülkenberg wel, dus gun ik hem deze kans. Maar of het zal gaan werken? Ik heb niet zoveel vertrouwen in Abiteboul, eerlijk gezegd.

Hulkenberg woont/woonde dichter bij de Nederlandse grens dan Verstappen....Vandaar dat zijn Nederlands ook beter verstaanbaar is dan van Belg met Nederlands startbewijs Verstappen. ;-)

Lijkt me toch ook pijnlijk voor die hulk om zelf nog nooit het f1 podium geproefd te hebben na 111 gp's terwijl dat broekie van 19 om de haverklap op die treetjes staat en zelfs al een keer op de bovenste trede.
Weet niet wat dat doet voor de zelfverzekerdheid van zo'n coureur.
Hopen dat hij bij Renault orde op zaken kan stellen.
