Column: Carlo's Column: Op naar het grote avontuur in Japan!

Mijn eerste column van dit jaar voor F1Today.nl schrijf ik met een ander gevoel en vanaf een andere plek in vergelijking met de voorgaande jaren. In tegenstelling tot de jaren hiervoor was ik in Nederland en nog volop in onderhandeling met diverse teams in verschillende raceklassen. Dit jaar is alles gelukkig al in kannen en kruiken aangezien ik een contract heb getekend met het Japanse Formule 3-fabrieksteam van TOMs Toyota!

Voor Kerst was alles dan ook nog niet zeker. Ik heb Kerst gezellig met wat familie en vrienden in huiselijke kring gevierd. Ik heb rond de periode Kerst en Oud en Nieuw eindelijk wat dagen voor mezelf gehad waarin ik lekker kon relaxen.

In de eerste week van januari kwam alles enigszins in een stroomversnelling. Ik had de keuze uit topteams in de Formule 3 Euroseries, World Series en het aanbod van TOMs Toyota. Tijdens de tweede week van januari werd alles duidelijk en in de derde week ben ik richting Japan vertrokken om daar het contract te tekenen.

Ik ben enorm vereerd met het aanbod dat TOMs heeft gedaan. Het is het beste Formule 3 team ter wereld en heeft fabrieksondersteuning van Toyota. Ik krijg twee Japanse teamgenoten, Takuto Iguchi en Keisuke Kunimoto, allebei debutanten in de Formule 3. Kunimoto won afgelopen jaar het Formula Challenge Japan kampioenschap, dat gelijk staat aan Formule Renault.

Ik woon sinds enkele weken ook in Japan in een leuk rijtjeshuis, in Gotemba. Sindsdien ben ik de omgeving aan het verkennen, kennismaken met het team en ook proberen een beetje Japans te leren, maar dat is knap lastig.

De eerste test met mijn nieuwe team, viel in het water. Of beter gezegd in de sneeuw. Het sneeuwt hier rondom Mount Fuji, waar ik woon en waar we ook gaan testen, behoorlijk. Met vlagen komen er enorme sneeuwbuien, waardoor het team de test heeft afgebroken.

Op 7 en 8 februari zal ik voor het eerst testen met de nieuwe wagen en het team, in de nieuwe kleuren voor 2008. Op 10 februari zal de officiële presentatie zijn van Toyota Team TOMs waar veel pers op af zal komen, ook doordat onze nieuwe hoofdsponsor bekend gemaakt zal worden. Ik heb de wagen gezien en hij ziet er erg gaaf uit!
