Nasser Al-Attiyah: "Alonso wil in mijn rally-auto testen"

Tweevoudig wereldkampioen Fernando Alonso zou in de toekomst wel eens in een andere autosportklasse kunnen gaan uitkomen. Dat vertelt de Qatarese rally-rijder Nasser Al-Attiyah. Volgens hem zou de Spanjaard volgende maand zijn Toyota Helix willen testen.

"Fernando is een erg goede vriend van me en we hebben de afgelopen weken met elkaar gesproken. Hij vertelde me dat hij mijn auto wilde testen en ik vertelde hem dat ik eerst moest finishen in Dakar en daarna zouden we praten om het te laten gebeuren", zegt Al-Attiyah tegenover Autosport.

"De gesprekken vinden plaats tussen hem, mij en Jesus Calleja, die ook een goede vriend van me is. Wij zijn allebei rijders van Gazoo Racing, maar ik weet nog steeds niet of Toyota betrokken wil raken bij de test. Het idee is om het te doen voor de Qatar Rally of net daarna."

Alonso liet zich er zelf ook al over uit in september van het vorige jaar en toen leek het nog niet te gaan gebeuren. "Ik moet bepaalde opties in overweging nemen en evalueren, maar er zijn dingen waar ik eerlijk over moet zijn en waarvan ik moet weten dat ik er het talent niet voor heb. Ik moet eerlijk zijn tegen mezelf en moet weten waar mijn limiet ligt en ik heb niet het talent om dat te doen."
