Fernando Alonso en Marc Coma samen aan de start in 2020

De kogel lijkt definitief door de kerk wat betreft Fernando Alonso. De Spanjaard zal samen met landgenoot Marc Coma aan de start staan in de Dakar-rally voor 2020 met een Toyota. Zowel France Televisions als de Spaanse krant Marca bevestigen de berichten over Alonso en Coma.

De tweevoudig wereldkampioen Formule 1 had al langer de droom om naast de Indy500 ook mee te doen aan Dakar omdat hij zichzelf wil uitdagen in andere autosport-disciplines. Toyota is ook geen onbekend merk voor Alonso aangezien hij hiermee in juni WEC-kampioen werd samen met voormalig F1-coureurs Sebastien Buemi en Kazuki Nakajima.

Enkele maanden geleden testte hij ook al met Toyota in Zuid-Afrika een Dakar-auto. Hij werd hierbij begeleidt door Giniel de Villiers, die in 2009 de Dakar wist te winnen.

Marc Coma is een grote naam in de Dakar-wereld. De Spanjaard won maar liefst 5 keer de rally bij de motoren. In 2006, 2009, 2011, 2014 en 2015 ging de eindzege naar Coma.
