Vijfvoudig winnaar Coma wordt navigator van Alonso tijdens Dakar 2020

Fernando Alonso krijgt een zeer ervaren navigator tijdens zijn eerste optreden in Dakar. De coureur van Toyota zal in de Hilux gezelschap krijgen van vijfvoudig Dakar-winnaar Marc Coma.

GPToday.net meldde eerder in augustus al dat Coma waarschijnlijk de navigator zou worden van Alonso en Toyota Gazoo Racing heeft dat nu bevestigd. Daar waar de tweevoudig Formule 1-kampioen in 2020 in Saudi-Arabië voor het eerst deelneemt aan de zwaarste rally ter wereld, zal Coma voor het eerst als navigator instappen in een van de auto's.

De afgelopen jaren was Coma de sportief directeur van de Dakar Rally, maar daarvoor beleefde hij een zeer succesvolle carrière op de crossmotoren. Namens KTM wist de 42-jarige Spanjaard liefst vijf keer te winnen in Dakar; dat deed hij in 2006, 2009, 2011, 2014 en 2015. Daarna nam Coma niet meer deel aan de rally, maar Toyota heeft hem weten te verleiden tot een avontuur in een volledig Spaanse auto met Alonso.

Navigeren nieuwe uitdaging voor Coma

Alonso en Coma trainden in de afgelopen periode samen en dat is de coureur goed bevallen. "Werken met Marc is fantastisch. Ik heb van hem heel veel kunnen leren over off-road rally's door zijn overvloedige kennis en ervaring. In deze tak van autosport is het belangrijk om je op je gemak te voelen bij de persoon met wie je de auto deelt. Marc en ik kunnen zeer goed opschieten en we werken effectief als een eenheid."

Ook Coma ziet het zitten om voor Toyota aan de slag te gaan. "Ik ben blij en trots dat ik onderdeel van dit team ben en dat ik mijn kennis kan delen met Fernando. Hoewel ik al lang in deze sport actief ben, is dit wel een nieuwe uitdaging voor mij. Ik heb me nooit voorgesteld dat ik me in de stoel van de navigator zou voorbereiden op een off-road rally in een Hilux."

Als je Dakar op de motor weet te winnen ben je wel een hele grote. Laat staan 5 keer.
Ik heb zelf 1 keer een poging gedaan om Dakar op de motor te doen.
Ging bij Zwolle de A28 op en terhoogte van de splitsing A50/A12 Arnhem/Utrecht was ik alweer genezen.
Volle bak doorgereden naar donerland, broodje gegeten, groene Fernandes erbij en thuis voor moeders de aardappelen gaar had. Eens maar nooit weer.

  Alonso moet eerst nog maar eens zien of ie dat kan evenaren.
