Toyota bevestigt: Fernando Alonso definitief naar Dakar 2020

De kogel is definitief door de kerk. Fernando Alonso zal in januari deel gaan nemen aan de Dakar Rally. Dat heeft Toyota Gazoo Racing donderdag bevestigd.

Er werd al enkele maanden aangenomen dat Alonso zich in januari 2020 zou gaan richten op een nieuwe uitdaging met de Dakar Rally. Met Toyota en navigator Marc Coma aan zijn zijde deed de tweevoudig Formule 1-kampioen al de nodige testritten, evenals oefenraces in Zuid-Afrika en Marokko. Alonso liet echter nog in het midden of hij ook echt mee zou gaan doen aan de Dakar Rally.

Aan die onzekerheid is nu echter een einde gekomen. De Rally van Marokko is de Spanjaard goed bevallen, waardoor hij definitief besloten heeft om mee te doen aan Dakar. In januari reist Alonso dus af naar Saoedi Arabië, het land waar de Dakar Rally komend jaar voor het eerst verreden wordt. Sinds 2009 werd de uitputtingsslag verreden in Zuid-Amerika, nadat de situatie in Noord-Afrika, de oorspronkelijke thuishaven van de wedstrijd, in 2008 te onveilig werd.

Alonso hoopt tijdens Dakar wederom voor een succesvolle samenwerking te gaan met Toyota. In het WEC werd de Spanjaard met Sebastien Buemi en Kazuki Nakajima wereldkampioen, terwijl ze ook twee keer de sterkste waren in de 24 uur van Le Mans. Toyota brengt verder een sterke ploeg op de been voor Dakar 2020, met naast Alonso ook oud-winnaars Nasser Al-Attiyah en Giniel de Villiers en de Nederlander Bernhard ten Brinke in de gelederen.

  Ik wou eerst gewoon "categorie C" schrijven maar volgens mij wordt dat niet begrepen want hebben de meesten hier zelfs niet eens een bromfiets certificaat ?

  Dat zou mooi zijn..... Ten Brinke heeft er al een paar keer dichtbij gezeten en hij verdiend het wel een keer om te winnen, maarja een ongelukje of panne zit (zeker bij Dakar) in een heel klein hoekje.... En dat terwijl er zo weinig hoekjes te vinden zijn in die enorme woestijnen ;)

Dan heb je echt niets meer te doen. Dakar is een spelletje waar je niet eens een goede coureur voor hoeft te zijn. Iig geen ex WK als Alonso. Nou veel plezier..

  @Neppatsrev, compleet andere discipline. Alfonso zal het niet makkelijk krijgen. Denk dat Ten Brinke hem het snot voor de ogen rijdt.
