Fernando Alonso: "Doel is om Dakar Rally uit te rijden"

Fernando Alonso debuteert komend weekend in de Dakar Rally. De tweevoudig Formule 1-kampioen en regerend kampioen in het WEC heeft slechts één doel en dat is de finish bereiken.

Nadat hij met Toyota kampioen werd in het WEC debuteert hij komend weekend als fabriekscoureur van dezelfde fabrikant in Dakar. Hij krijgt titelverdediger Nasser Al-Attiyah, voormalig winnaar Giniel de Villiers en Nederlander Bernhard ten Brinke als teamgenoten, terwijl Marc Coma hem zal navigeren. Tegenover Autosport maakte Alonso duidelijk dat zijn enige doel is om de rally uit te rijden.

"Ik doe mee aan Dakar om te zien hoe het is, maar nog meer om de finish te bereiken. We weten dat maar een op de vier mensen die aan dit evenement beginnen, de finish ook bereiken. Dat is zwaar, en ik weet dat het erg lastig wordt. Ik denk niet dat er iets is dat meer verschilt van de F1 dan Dakar, maar het is een interessante uitdaging - op papier onmogelijk, maar ik wil het proberen en ervan leren."

Alonso wil 'verrijkt' worden als coureur

Bovendien gaf Alonso een klein inkijkje in de reden dat hij deel wilde nemen aan Dakar, dat dit jaar voor het eerst verreden wordt in Saoedi-Arabië. De Spanjaard verklaart dat hij zichzelf pas in een avontuur wil storten als hij het idee heeft dat het hem en zijn kwaliteiten als coureur kan verrijken. Dat volgens Alonso alleen door de voorbereidende periode al het geval.

"De voorbereiding die ik in de afgelopen maanden gedaan heb, heeft me verrijkt als coureur. Dat is ook een van mijn prioriteiten als ik deze uitdagingen aanga: om uiteindelijk een betere coureur te zijn na dat avontuur. Ik moet het met een zekere kalmte aanpakken. Ik wil niet naar Dakar gaan om na twee of drie dagen te moeten stoppen door een domme fout."

In de aanloop naar Dakar reed Alonso meerdere off-road rally's, waarvan de meest recente de Al Ula-Neom Rally was. Daarbij eindigde de Toyota-coureur op de derde positie. Aanstaande zondag is de eerste etappe van de Dakar Rally, die begint in Jeddah en op 17 januari eindigt met een etappe naar finishplaats Qiddiya.

  StevenQ. Wel zeker een echte woestijn... maar niet bepaald het type woestijn die je vroeger de avond verslagen van zag met extreem zachte duinen. Ja er waren wel wat etappes bij die mooi waren... maar het echte Dakar gevoel ontbrak wel in zuid-amerika.

  Die extreem zachte duinen hebben we in Zuid Amerika echt wel gezien, vraag maar aan b.v. de heren Coronel die er vaak genoeg in vast hebben gezeten.

  Alles is daar al, dus gaat wel door. Vroeghu was ik fan van Alonso, maar tegenwoordig begin ik hem een beetje hekelen aan zijn houding die hij heeft sinds dat hij bij McLaren heeft gereden.
