Fernando Alonso heeft geen beste beurt gemaakt tijdens de tiende etappe van Dakar bij de auto's. De Spanjaard verkeek zich op een duin en ging over de kop. Carlos Sainz pakte de ritzege in de stilgelegde etappe naar Shubaytah.

De tiende etappe van de woestijnrally zou oorspronkelijk 534 kilometer aan klassementsproef tellen, maar na 345 kilometer werd besloten om de race te neutraliseren. De reden daarvoor was de harde wind in de laatste fase van de etappe, waardoor de organisatie de veiligheid van de coureurs niet kon waarborgen.

Voor Alonso kwam de neutralisatie te laat, want al vroeg in de etappe ging de coureur van Toyota de fout in. Hij schatte een duin niet helemaal goed in, waardoor hij op de weg naar beneden twee keer over de kop ging. Alonso kon verder, maar mede door een aantal reparaties verloor hij meer dan een uur op dagwinnaar Sainz, die voor de vierde keer deze rally de sterkste was bij de auto's.

Jakub Przygonski reed bij de ingekorte etappe naar de tweede tijd: hij gaf ruim 3 minuten toe op Sainz. De beste Toyota volgde op de derde positie en deze keer was het niet Nasser Al-Attiyah, maar Giniel de Villiers die de beste coureur van het fabrieksteam was. Hij bleef de Peugeot van Pierre Lachaume en de Overdrive Toyota van Yazeed Al Rajhi voor.

Twee Nederlanders wisten zich knap bij de top 10 te rijden in de tiende etappe. Bernhard ten Brinke had 6 minuten en 40 seconden meer nodig dan Sainz en werd zesde, op een minuut gevolgd door nummer 7 Erik van Loon. Ten Brinke is in het algemeen klassement ook de beste Nederlander met een zevende positie, op 1 uur en 15 minuten van leider Sainz.

Daar waar Sainz de concurrentie in de afgelopen dagen dichterbij zag komen, sloeg hij een hele goede slag tijdens de tiende etappe. Nasser Al-Attiyah verloor achttien minuten door navigatieproblemen en Stephane Peterhansel gaf 12 minuten toe op Sainz, waardoor de tweevoudig winnaar nu een marge van 18 minuten heeft op beide concurrenten.

Die Sainz heeft wel een geluksengeltje op zijn schouder! Nu ineens 18 min voorsprong,
gisteren nog geen minuut. En dat door het halverwege afblazen van de etappe.

En met zijn allen naar beneden rennen, mazzel dat er niet nog een auto aan kwam. Ik vind Dakar geweldig maar het is echt levensgevaarlijk voor publiek en deelnemers.
