Wehrlein wint, Wittmann kroont zich tot kampioen

Marco Wittmann is de nieuwe DTM-kampioen. De 24-jarige BMW-coureur had op de Lausitzring genoeg aan een zesde plaats om de rest op een onoverbrugbare achterstand te zetten met nog twee races te gaan. Wittmann is de troonopvolger van Audi-rijder Mike Rockenfeller.

"Dit is sensationeel, gewoonweg ongelofelijk", stamelde de BMW-coureur na afloop. "Het was een moeilijke race, ik moest uit het gedrang proberen te blijven. Dat bleek de sleutel voor de titel. Nu moet ik eerst al deze emoties zien te verwerken."

De winst op de Lausitzring ging naar Pascal Wehrlein. Een opsteker voor Mercedes, dat een moeilijk seizoen beleeft. De pas 19-jarige Wehrlein vertrok van pole position en stond de leiding eigenlijk geen moment af. Het was alleen even schrikken toen hij in ronde 16 naast de baan belandde.

Wehrlein kon zijn weg vervolgen en boekte zijn eerste zege in de DTM. "Een geweldig succes voor mij en het team. De strategie was perfect. Bedankt aan Mercedes dat ze me in staat hebben gesteld om hier te winnen."
