Wehrlein wint in Moskou en herovert leiding kampioenschap

Pascal Wehrlein heeft de eerste race van het DTM-weekend op de Moscow Raceway gewonnen. De Mercedes-coureur startte als tweede achter Marco Wittmann en pakte de leiding in de slotfase van de race. Het is voor Wehrlein zijn derde zege van het seizoen. Wehrlein pakte ook de leiding terug in het kampioenschap, na deze te zijn verloren in de controversiële race in Oostenrijk van vier weken geleden.

De eerste fase van de race werd verreden achter de Safety Car, na een crash in de eerste ronde tussen Miguel Molina en Christian Vietoris. Molina spinde in het gedrang in de eerste bocht en werd geraakt door Vietoris, die daarmee in de banden eindigde. Bij de herstart hield Wittmann de leiding, met Wehrlein in zijn kielzog.

Wehrlein zette Wittmann flink onder druk, maar het gevecht werd onderbroken door een nieuwe crash. Bij deze crash waren titelkandidaat Mattias Ekstrom en Timo Glock betrokken. Ekstrom was te enthousiast in een poging om Glock in te halen en het duo raakte elkaar op hoge snelheid. Beide rijders kwamen in de banden terecht en hun race zat erop.

Na een fase van drie ronden achter de Safety Car werd het veld weer losgelaten en waren er nog vijftien minuten te gaan. Wehrlein dichtte het gat naar Wittmann in rap tempo. In zijn eerste poging lukte het Wehrlein niet om Wittmann te passeren, ondanks het voordeel van DRS.

In de volgende ronden bleef Wehrlein aandringen, maar het lukte hem steeds net niet om in de laatste bocht zijn inhaalpoging te laten slagen. Met nog vier minuten te gaan wist Wehrlein met een mooie actie Wittmann te verrassen en de leiding te pakken. Wehrlein reed vervolgens eenvoudig weg bij Wittmann die ook nog zijn tweede plaats moest verdedigen ten opzichte van Jamie Green.

Uiteindelijk liets Green zich nog verrassen in de laatste bocht van de laatste ronde door Bruno Spengler. Wehrlein wint dus de race, voor Wittmann en Spengler. Jamie Green wordt vierde, terwijl de Spanjaard Daniel Juncadella met een vijfde plaats zijn beste resultaat dit seizoen weet te behalen. Opvallend is ook de prestatie van Gary Paffet. De Engelsman startte als twintigste, maar weet nog naar de zevende plaats te rijden.

De tweede race start morgen om 15:10.
