Mortara wint spannende tweede race op Nürburgring

Audi-coureur Edoardo Mortara heeft de tweede DTM-race op de Nürburgring gewonnen. De Italiaan startte de race als zesde en had een mooi gevecht met Lucas Auer om de zege. Achter Mortara en Auer deed Marco Wittmann wederom goede zaken in het kampioenschap met een derde plek. Concurrent Robert Wickens scoorde geen punten en zakt terug in het kampioenschap.

Bij de start was Mortara goed weg en wist hij teamgenoot Jamie Green en BMW-coureur Augusto Farfus te verschalken. Dankzij een sterke eerste stint wist Mortara via de stops Blomqvist, Spengler en Wittmann te passeren.

Mortara maakte als een van de laatste zijn verplichte stop De latet stop bleek een sleutelmoment te zijn: Mortara kwam voor Wittmann het circuit op en kon het gat richting Auer gaan dichtrijden. In ronde 32 was het gat gedicht en wist Mortara met de hulp van DRS voorbij Auer te geraken.

In de slotfase moest Marco Wittmann nog alle zeilen bijzetten om zijn derde plek niet te verliezen aan Mattias Ekström. Met nog een ronde te gaan had Ekström DRS, maar lukte het niet een serieuze inhaalpoging te plaatsen. Ekström werd vierde voor Nico Muller en Bruno Spengler.

De volgende races in DTM zijn in het weekend van 23 september. Plaats van handeling is de Hungaroring.
