Molina wint eerste race, beslissing in kampioenschap valt morgen

Audi-coureur Miguel Molina heeft de eerste race op de Hockenheimring gewonnen. Titelrivalen Marco Wittmann en Edoardo Mortara finishten als tweede en derde: Mortara heeft alleen nog een mathematische kans op de titel.

Mortara begon de race met een achterstand van veertien punten op Wittmann, maar startte vier plekken achter de Duitser. De opdracht voor Mortara was in de top zes finishen en daar slaagde de Italiaan ruimschoots in. Vanaf een achtste plaats reed Mortara een inhaalrace om een plek achter zijn rivaal Wittmann te finishen.

In de openingsfase reed Mortara berekenend rond. Vanaf de vijftiende ronde begon Mortara aan een inhaalrace. In de hairpin passeerde de Italiaan Timo Glock in de BMW. In de ronde erna werd ook Agusto Farfus ingerekend. Ook Mike Rockenfeller en Tom Blomqvist konden weinig tegenstand bieden toen Mortara achter hen reed en werden vrij snel verschalkt.

Met nog een aantal ronden lag Mortara op een vierde plaats en begon hij jacht te maken op BMW-coureur Antonio Felix da Costa. Mortara passeerde de Portugees met een mooie actie en kwam zo achter concurrent Wittmann te liggen. Vooraan was er voor Molina geen vuiltje aan de lucht. In de slotfase liet Molina de teugels wat vieren, maar kwam hij met een voorsprong van bijna twee seconden als winnaar over de finish.

Door de derde plaats van Mortara en de tweede plaats is het gat in het kampioenschap nu zeventien punten. Morgen zijn er nog 25 punten te verdienen en weten we wie de nieuwe kampioen is in het DTM-kampioenschap.

Hele goede race van Mortara. Rockenfeller (ook Audi) liet hem er "natuurlijk" voorbij, maar de andere inhaalacties waren allemaal op BMW coureurs en vooral knap gedaan.
