Mortara wint finalerace Hockenheim, Wittmann nieuwe DTM-kampioen

Marco Wittmann is de nieuwe kampioen van de DTM. De Duitser finishte weliswaar achter zijn grote concurrent Edoardo Mortara maar hield vier punten voorsprong over om zo zijn eerste titel in het kampioenschap te pakken. Mortara deed wat er nodig was om nog een kans te maken op de titel, namelijk het winnen van de race.

Voor BMW is het de tweede titel in vier jaar tijd, nadat Bruno Sprengler in 2012 bij de terugkeer van BMW in de sport meteen de titel pakte. Mortara reed een soevereine race en had op het podium gezelschap van Christian Vietoris en Paul di Resta. Wittmann finishte net buiten het podium op de vierde plaats.

Bij de start behield Antonio Felix da Costa de leiding, terwijl Mortara een paar plekken verloor. De Italiaan vocht zich echter terug met een fraaie inhaalactie in de hairpin. Halverwege de race kwam Da Costa zwaar onder druk te staan van Paffet. De twee raakten elkaar en Da Costa viel ver terug, Paffet kreeg een doorrijstraf.

Wittmann lag ondertussen aan de leiding met Mortara in zijn kielzog. De Italiaan wilde koste wat kost de race winnen en zette zijn bolide naast die van Wittmann. Wittmann kon geen partij bieden en zag ook Vietoris en Di Resta nog langszij komen. Een vierde plaats was echter voldoende voor het kampioenschap.

Da Costa kwam de clash met Paffet niet meer te boven en neemt zo zonder een puntenfinish afscheid van de DTM. Ook veteraan Timo Scheider kon geen indruk maken.

Ik heb de DTM verder niet gevolgd maar die da Costa had ik toch hoog zitten. Formule wagens naar DTM en andersom is nog nooit een succes geweest. Ook (niet meer zo) snelle F1 coureurs hebben eigenlijk nooit succes gehad in de DTM.
Vroeger vond ik het wel een mooie klasse met herkenbare auto's (Mercedes, BMW, Alfa! en zelfs Opel) en aansprekende rijders.

De DTM is niet meer wat het was geweest. F1 coureurs zijn nooit succesvol geweest en andersom misschien dat Wehrlein de Ban breekt. Kijk maar naar Di Resta, Hakkinen, Coulthard, Alesi, Ralf Schumacher, Albers,en Clock.

Wittmanis voor de tweede keer kampioen geworden en de jongste dubbel kampioen ooit. Het is de derde titel voor BMW sinds hun terugkeer. Mooie prestatie trouwens. Wel zuur voor Mortara die eerder 10 punten op discutabele gronden kwijt raaks op Zandvoort. Ook het voordeel dat BMW kreeg; 7,5 kg lichter en bredere achtervleugel vind ineen smetje.

Net zoals gister weer een ijzersterke race van Mortara, lekker geracet met veel risico. Maar over het hele (saaie) seizoen gezien is Wittmann de terechte kampioen. En ik mis ook de strijd zoals met de Alfa's/Opels en de Ludwigs, Schneiders, Larini's en Nanini's, ben bang dat iedereen dan elke ronde "under investigation" zal zijn :) Daar is "onze" Max nog een lieverdje bij vergeleken.
