Ekström reist als titelfavoriet af naar slotstuk

Mattias Ekström ligt op koers voor zijn derde DTM-titel. De kampioen van 2004 en 2007 reist volgende maand als leider in de tussenstand af naar de Hockenheimring voor de seizoensfinale. De Zweed heeft bovendien een comfortabele voorsprong. Audi-coureur Ekström heeft 172 punten verzameld, 21 punten meer dan merkgenoot Rene Rast.

Er zijn in het weekend van 14 en 15 oktober echter nog 56 punten te vergeven, dus gespeeld is het allerminst. De lijst titelkandidaten bestaat uit zes namen. Naast Ekström en Rast staan daar Jamie Green (137 punten), Mike Rockenfeller (134 punten), regerend kampioen Marco Wittmann (134 punten) en Lucas Auer (131 punten) op.

Gezien zijn riante uitgangspositie is de 39-jarige Ekström de grote favoriet. Opvallend is dat de Zweed afgelopen weekend op de Red Bull Ring pas zijn eerste zege van het seizoen boekte. Ekström moet het dit jaar vooral hebben van zijn constante prestatiecurve. Veelwinnaars Auer en Rast hebben meer uitschieters, maar ook meer uitvalbeurten en nulscores.
