Paffett: "Wehrlein een andere rijder dan in 2015"

DTM-coureur Gary Paffett heeft voor dit seizoen een oude bekende mogen verwelkomen bij Mercedes. Pascal Wehrlein keert na twee jaar in de Formule 1 terug in de toerwagenklasse. De Duitser kroonde zich in 2015 tot jongste DTM-kampioen aller tijden. De voorbije seizoenen reed hij voor Manor en Sauber in de Formule 1, maar nu keert hij noodgedwongen terug naar de DTM.

In de Formule 1 was er geen plek meer voor Wehrlein. Paffett: "Ik ken Pascal al sinds hij debuteerde in de DTM en heb van dichtbij meegemaakt hoe hij de titel pakte. We hebben contact met elkaar gehouden toen hij in de Formule 1 actief was, aangezien hij onderdeel bleef uitmaken van de Mercedes-familie. Wehrlein is enorm gegroeid in de Formule 1."

"Hij was erg jong toen hij de DTM-titel won en de druk op zijn schouders was groot. Er waren ook wat incidenten die hem niet hielpen. Maar hij heeft zelf toegegeven dat hij de afgelopen twee jaar behoorlijk veranderd is. Pascal is een meer compleet persoon en een meer complete rijder dan toen hij het kampioenschap op zijn naam schreef. De mensen zullen een andere Wehrlein zien dan de Wehrlein die eind 2015 de DTM verliet."
