Juncadella en Habsburg voor Aston Martin in het DTM

Het Aston Martin DTM-team, dat gerund gaat worden door R-Motorsport, heeft Daniel Juncadella en Ferdinand Habsburg aangetrokken als coureurs voor 2019. In een eerder stadium werd al bekend gemaakt dat Jake Dennis en Paul di Resta in 2019 voor Aston Martin zullen gaan rijden.

Juncadella reed afgelopen jaar, tijdens het laatste jaar dat Mercedes actief was in het kampioenschap, voor de formatie uit Stuttgart naar de overwinning op Brands Hatch. Hij finishte als vijftiende in de eindstand. "Ik heb vorig jaar een verandering doorgemaakt op sportief gebied", verklaarde de Spanjaard. "Het DTM-jaar was op meerdere vlakken uitstekend voor mij. Ik wilde graag doorgaan, zeker met deze nieuwe regels."

Ferdinand Habsburg maakt in 2019 zijn debuut in de DTM. De bijna Macau-winnaar van 2018 komt over uit het Europese Formule 3 waar hij de afgelopen twee seizoenen voor Carlin reed. "Ik kijk enorm uit naar mijn DTM debuut", vertelde Habsburg. "Dit is een zeer competitief kampioenschap dat erg professioneel in elkaar zit. Het zal moeilijk zijn voor een rookie om me te meten met de wereldtop in de toerwagens. Ik probeer dit jaar zo veel mogelijk te leren en uiteindelijk elke race beter te worden."

Daniel Juncadella heeft uiteindelijk een deal met Nissan, voor het Super GT-kampioenschap, afgewezen. "Ik weet dat het een moeilijke beslissing was, maar ik kon mezelf niet voor 100% vertrouwen", verklaarde hij. "R-Motorsport was mijn eerste keuze, ik ken de engineers, monteurs en de mensen die met HWA hebben gewerkt. Het klopt dat ik nog andere opties had, uiteindelijk heb ik voor het DTM gekozen omdat dat attractiever is."
