Gerhard Berger ziet DTM-race in Monaco wel zitten

Gerhard Berger, directeur van het DTM-kampioenschap, heeft aangegeven aan persbureau DPA dat hij interesse heeft om Monaco toe te voegen aan de DTM-kalender.

Sinds enkele jaren wisselt het Formule E-kampioenschap met de Historische Grand Prix van Monaco af. Deze wedstrijden worden enkele weken voorafgaande aan de Grand Prix van Monaco verreden.

DTM heeft een traditie met het rijden op smalle stratencircuits. In het verleden reed men onder andere in China, Helsinki en Singen. Het bekendste stratencircuit wat het DTM-kampioenschap heeft aangedaan was de AVUS in Berlijn. Hedendaags heeft het kampioenschap slechts één stratenrace, deze vond afgelopen weekend plaats op de Norisring.

Voormalig Formule 1-coureur en Toro Rosso-eigenaar Berger kreeg afgelopen weekend bezoek van zijn vriend Prins Albert II van Monaco en vertelde daarna dat 'Monaco een goed verhaal' zou zijn voor de DTM-kalender.

"Ik heb goede connecties en misschien krijgen we ooit een voet tussen de deur", verklaarde de Oostenrijker. DTM is opzoek naar nieuwe locaties en is bezig met het 'herprogrammeren' van haar programma. De klasse heeft dit jaar dezelfde regels aangenomen als het Japanse Super GT-kampioenschap in de hoop om meer samen te gaan werken.

Berger verklaarde in een eerder stadium dat DTM nooit als voorprogramma van een andere klasse mocht zijn, desondanks vertelde hij dat: "Ik voor Monaco graag een uitzondering zal maken".
