ART Grand Prix kiest Kubica als coureur voor rentree in DTM

Het hing al in de lucht en nu is het ook officieel: Robert Kubica racet in 2020 in de DTM. De Pool gaat een avontuur aan met ART Grand Prix, dat komend seizoen haar rentree maakt in de Duitse toerwagenklasse.

Afgelopen seizoen kwam Kubica nog uit in de Formule 1, maar bij Williams lukte het hem niet om zijn rentree op te luisteren met goede resultaten. Daarbij werd de enkelvoudig Grand Prix-winnaar ook niet geholpen door de bolide van het Britse team. Nog voor het einde van het seizoen kondigde hij zijn vertrek bij Williams al aan, waarna Alfa Romeo hem vastlegde als test- en reservecoureur.

Tegelijkertijd gingen er geruchten rond dat Kubica die werkzaamheden ging combineren met een avontuur in de DTM en vandaag is daar de officiële bevestiging van gekomen. De Pool maakt de overstap naar die klasse met ART Grand Prix, dat na drie seizoenen afwezigheid terugkeert in de DTM. Het team wordt een klantenteam van BMW, nadat het in 2015 en 2016 nog met Mercedessen reed.

"De DTM trekt mij al lang aan - en de test in december op Jerez smaakte naar meer", vertelde Kubica, die uitkijkt naar de samenwerking met ART Grand Prix. "ART is al jaren een grote naam in de internationale autosport. Ik weet zeker dat we gezamenlijk veel kunnen bereiken in de DTM. We hebben natuurlijk nog wel ervaring op te doen ten opzichte van de gevestigde orde, maar we zullen hard werken om onszelf doorlopend te verbeteren."

ART-teambaas Sébastien Philippe is trots dat zijn team BMW mag vertegenwoordigen in de DTM. "Ons doel is om Robert bij te staan, die een nieuw hoofdstuk gaat schrijven in zijn toch al rijke autosport-carrière. In 2016 raceten we voor het laatst in de DTM, dus ART zal de fijne kneepjes van dit sterke kampioenschap opnieuw moeten leren. Aanvankelijk leggen we de lat niet al te hoog, maar met de vastberadenheid van het team hopen we in de loop van het jaar de strijd aan te gaan met de voorste groep."

Prachtig nieuws. Een extra reden om het DTM weer goed te volgen. Ben benieuwd of hij zich met een klanten BMW staande kan houden.

  Ook echt een prima aanwinst voor de DTM.
  Ik verwacht veel wit-rode vlaggen ginds dit seizoen.

  Doet me veel denken aan de entree van Sandro Nannini voor Alfa in de jaren 90. Zijn F1 carrière was over na een ongeluk waarbij hij zijn arm verloor. Die werd met microchirurgie weer er aan gezet, maar gewoon schakelen ging hem daarna heel slecht af. Hij werd een van de eerste in de DTM die een sequentiële bak in zijn Alfa kreeg. (Soort grote joystick)

  Sandro Nanni met de mooiste DTM auto ooit. De Alfa's waren toen fantastisch.

  Ik ben de jaartallen kwijt van de DTM maar keek in de tijden van Klaus Ludwig in een Mercedes, Hans Joachim Stuck in een Audi en Johny Cecoccoto ( zal het wel anders spellen) in een BMW. Geweldige autosport.

  @Joeppp. Vroege jaren 90, was eigenlijk de beste tijd voor de DTM. Stuck, Biela en Röhrl in die loodzware 90 Quattro. BMW met Ravaglia, Ceccotto en Joachim "Jockel" Winkelhock en idd Mercedes met Ludwig en Nannini's latere aartsvijand Roland Asch (Ash kreeg het met Nannini aan de stok in Berlijn reed de Italiaan eraf, waarop die verse banden haalde en de race maar met één missie vervolgde als een compleet geflipte Forza Motorsport racer, namelijk om Asch eraf te rijden. Wat hem ook lukte)

  Heb toen ook gekeken, Bartels, Maylander (jawel de safetycar man) en vooral Bernd Schneider die later ongenaakbaar was en ook Nannini zijn teamgenoot ook een oud F1 rijder Larini.
