Ward trekt zich terug, vrij baan voor herverkiezing Todt

David Ward heeft zijn kandidatuur voor de presidentsverkiezingen voor de internationale autosportbond FIA ingetrokken. Hij wist zich niet van genoeg steun te verzekeren voor een officiële nominatie. Hierdoor is de weg vrij voor een tweede termijn van Jean Todt aan het roer van de federatie. De Fransman is de enige overgebleven kandidaat.

Ward kon niet genoeg vice-presidenten aan zich binden om zich definitief verkiesbaar te stellen. Hij feliciteerde Todt alvast, maar plaatste tevens een kritische kanttekening. "Al vele jaren worstelt de FIA met de bestuurlijke vorm. Te vaak heeft de bond een stap vooruit gezet om daarna twee stappen terug te doen. Dit blijkt uit de kortere kandidatenlijst dan in 2009, wat teniet gedaan wordt door de eis voor 26 nominaties van leden. De eis voor zeven vice-presidenten bepaalt daarnaast of uberhaupt van een verkiezing sprake kan zijn. Daarnaast maken verkregen steunbetuigingen van voor de verkiezingsperiode het onmogelijk voor elke kandidaat om het tegen de zittende voorzitter op te nemen."

"Maar mijn kandidatuur was niet ingegeven door een brandende ambitie om de positie van FIA-president te bekleden. Mijn voorkeur ging uit naar een voorzitter van een van de clubs, ondersteund door de benoeming van een nieuwe directeur. Daarom omschreef ik mijn verkiesbaarheid met enige tegenzin. Ik heb geprobeerd om het debat over de tekortkomingen in het bestuur van de FIA aan te wakkeren. Het doet me deugd dat ik daar in geslaagd ben."
