McLaren kan zich in 2014 niet achter excuses verschuilen

Het team van McLaren staat op de drempel van een belangrijk jaar. 2014 is het laatste seizoen met Mercedes als motorleverancier, maar het moet ook het jaar worden waarin de Britse renstal zich revancheert voor het verloren seizoen 2013. De druk loopt op, McLaren moet.

Teambaas Martin Whitmarsh: "We hebben een lang en zwaar seizoen achter de rug. Het jaar duurde langer dan ik ooit heb meegemaakt. Nu ben ik opgewonden over de toekomst. Met de ingrijpende regelwijzigingen voor 2014 begint iedereen op nul. We kunnen ons niet achter excuses verschuilen."

"Hebben we een competitieve aandrijflijn? Ik weet het niet. In de paddock en daarbuiten lopen blijkbaar veel goed ingelichte mensen rond, want ik hoor overal dat Mercedes een klein voordeel heeft ten opzichte van Ferrari en Renault. Ik heb geen idee waar men die data vandaan haalt. Dat gezegd hebbende, van wat ik weet van de middelen en organisatie bij Mercedes, kan je ze zo'n uitdaging wel toevertrouwen. Ik vermoed dat we wel competitief zullen zijn."
