'Formule 1-auto's vaker zijwaarts in 2014'

Het is goed mogelijk dat de Formule 1-auto's komend seizoen meer zullen uitbreken en vaker zijwaarts de bocht uit zullen komen. Dat verwacht het Britse Autosport. Vooraf werd al gesteld dat het hogere koppel van de V6-turbomotoren zou zorgen voor meer wielspin bij het uitkomen van de bocht, maar na de eerst wintertest lijken er nog meer redenen te zijn voor het glijden van de auto's.

Uit de eerste feedback van de coureurs valt op te maken dat het tegenwoordig erg lastig is om de achterkant van de auto in toom te houden, wat voornamelijk te wijten is aan de temperatuur van de achterbanden. Waar men vroeger gebruik kon maken van snufjes om de achterbanden op temperatuur te houden, zoals de warmte van de blown-diffusers of grote remschijven, is dat in 2014 niet meer mogelijk.

Komend seizoen zijn de auto's uitgerust met minder downforce, hardere banden en uitlaten die geen warme lucht meer vlak langs de achterbanden voeren. Ook beschikt men over kleinere remmen aan de achterzijde van de auto en door de manier waarop energie nu wordt opgeslagen, daalt de temperatuur van de banden snel tot onder het gewenste niveau.

Wanneer dit gebeurt, beschikken de coureurs over weinig grip aan de achterzijde waardoor ze meer kans hebben op wielspin en momenten van overstuur. Adrian Sutil was een van de rijders die benadrukte dat de achterbanden in 2014 lastig op temperatuur te houden zijn: "We hadden het erg lastig om de achterbanden op temperatuur te houden. De outlap ging het best, maar vervolgens ging de temperatuur omlaag en waren de banden steenhard. Het was werkelijk alsof je op ijs reed, erg lastig om de auto met het koppel van de motor te controleren. Er was veel wielspin en dat maakte de auto onstuimig," besluit Sutil.
