McLaren doet er een schepje bovenop voor Bahrein

Het team van McLaren leed afgelopen weekend een gevoelige nederlaag in Maleisië. Waar de Britse renstal vorig jaar oppermachtig was, daar reed nu concurrent Ferrari iedereen op een hoopje. En de volgende Grand Prix is in Bahrein, de plek waar het Italiaanse team in het voorseizoen goede tijden liet noteren. McLaren is gewaarschuwd.

McLaren-directeur Martin Whitmarsh: Je maakt je altijd zorgen als je verslagen wordt en Ferrari toonde zich heel sterk in Maleisië. Ik denk ook dat wijzelf niet zo goed gepresteerd hebben, het hele weekend niet. Diverse omstandigheden voorkwamen dat we tweede en derde werden. Maar we hebben het gewoon niet goed gedaan. Daar maak ik me druk over en we moeten er voor zorgen dat de auto sneller gaat bij de volgende race.

We gaan naar Bahrein en we gaan er alles aan doen om daar wel te winnen. We staan na het afgelopen, zeer matige weekend nog steeds aan de leiding van beide kampioenschappen. Zo slecht is onze start van het seizoen dus niet. We hebben een goed uitgangspunt, maar we moeten het in Bahrein beter doen en een stijgende lijn inzetten voor de Europese races.

Whitmarsh denkt dat het kampioenschap beslist zal worden door de ontwikkelingssnelheid van de kanshebbers. Het begint wat dat betreft aardig op vorig jaar te lijken. Het maakt niets meer uit waar je de vorige race stond, als je niet doorgaat met de ontwikkeling ben je in de volgende Grand Prix verloren. Het gaat erom elke Grand Prix je niveau weer een stapje hoger te leggen en dat hebben we afgelopen weekend niet gedaan. Dat moet beter voor de volgende keer.

Het is absoluut een feit dat McLaren heeft gefaald in Sepang. Het is goed om te horen dat de teamleiding dit beseft en dat ze er wat aan willen doen. Het is niet mijn favoriete team, maar je mag ze nooit uitvlakken voor het kampioenschap.

Idd. Ik ben een Mclaren fan en ze komen echt nog wel terug. Ik moet wel zeggen dat het een domme fout was van Massa. En dan terecht komen op dat ene stukje grintgedeelte. Voor en achter hem was gras.
