'Flat spot' voorkwam beter resultaat Kovalainen

McLaren-coureur Heikki Kovalainen reed in Bahrein redelijk anoniem naar de vijfde plek. Alleen in zijn laatste stint kon hij voluit gaan en reed prompt de snelste raceronde. De veertig ronden daarvoor werden verstoord door een 'flat spot', een vlakke plek op een band, en de verkeerde bandenkeuze. Er zat dus veel meer in voor de Fin.

McLaren-directeur Martin Whitmarsh: Een groot deel van Heikkis race werd verpest door een flat spot, die hij kreeg omdat zijn wielen blokkeerden in de eerste bocht. Bij zijn eerste pitstop was de rechtervoorband helemaal op. En achteraf gezien is het makkelijk praten, maar voor de tweede stint kozen we de verkeerde banden. We probeerden iets anders met een lange stint, maar dat gaf ons geen voordeel. We hebben tijdens de race niet de volledige potentie van de auto benut.

Over Kovalainen is McLaren meer dan tevreden en ze verwachten dat de Fin alleen nog maar beter wordt. Whitmarsh: Hij is pas elf weken bij ons en hij wordt alleen maar sterker en sterker. Het gevoel binnen het team is dat we nog lang niet het beste van Heikki hebben gezien.
