Canadese organisatie maakt crash-muur Kubica veiliger

De organisatie van de Grand Prix van Canada heeft bekendgemaakt dat het maatregelen heeft genomen om een crash zoals BMW Sauber-coureur Robert Kubica vorig jaar meemaakte, te voorkomen. De Pool knalde op hoge snelheid frontaal op een betonnen muur, vlak voor bocht 10. Kubica bleef nagenoeg ongedeerd, maar het ongeluk had veel slechter kunnen aflopen.

De internationale autosportbond FIA gaf na de race ook de opdracht om de muur voor de volgende race te veranderen en de organisatie heeft daar gehoor aan gegeven. Francois Dumontier, vice-president van de promotor van de race op het circuit van Montreal, deelde mee: Bij een zelfde crash zal de auto nu langs de muur glijden en niet op de muur knallen. De maatregel hoort bij een pakket aanpassingen ter waarde van 4,5 miljoen dollar. Zo zijn de paddockfaciliteiten verbeterd en enkele bochten zijn opnieuw geasfalteerd.
