Toyota-directeur: "Formule 1 staat er heel goed voor"

Toyota-directeur John Howett vindt dat de Formule 1, ondanks alle schandalen en het wegvallen van Super Aguri, in een hele sterke positie zit. De start van het huidige seizoen wordt overschaduwd door een seksschandaal van Max Mosley, voorzitter van de internationale autosportbond FIA. Tel daarbij op de spionageschandalen van 2007, het niet toetreden van Prodrive en het vertrek van Super Aguri en de gedachte kan ontstaan dat het niet zo goed gaat met de koningsklasse van de autosport.

Een hele verkeerde gedachte, vindt Howett. Ik geloof echt dat de Formule 1 er heel goed voor staat, afgezien van alle schandalen. Men heeft de neiging om de Formule 1 naar beneden te halen, maar we hebben nog steeds een van de sterkste en meest populaire sporten ter wereld. Bovendien is het dit jaar competitiever dan ooit. De verschillen tussen de teams zijn heel klein en dat is iets waar de Formule 1 trots op moet zijn.

Uiteraard is de aftocht van Super Aguri zonde, maar de Formule 1 in zijn geheel is commercieel gezien erg sterk. Enkele hele grote bedrijven zijn betrokken in deze wereld en het bereik van de Formule 1 is globaal en groter dan elke andere sport. Alleen de wereldkampioenschappen voetbal en de Olympische Spelen hebben meer bereik en die beide evenementen vinden eens in de vier jaar plaats. De Formule 1 is zeker niet perfect, er is nog genoeg voor verbetering vatbaar, maar we hebben ook genoeg redenen om positief te zijn. Misschien moeten we ons meer richten op die positieve kanten.

Ik had toch graag gezien dat er nog meer grote auto merken bij def f1 hadden gezeten .Laten we eerlijk zijn degene die in de rally voor aan staan horen ook in de f1 te rijden tenminste dat is mijn mening of eigenlijk vind ik het jammer.Audi met hun historie en peugeot,jaguar .nissan,ford wel op le mans, volkswagen die nu pas enkele jaren meedoet met de Dakar

@Felix: het is voor een fabrikant niet op te brengen om zowel rally als F1 te rijden. Tenminste, niet als je het goed wilt doen.

Toyota reed rally voor ze de F1 gingen rijden. Ze hebben de keuze moeten maken, terwijl het toch volgens veel bronnen het meest vermogende F1 team is. Op hun hoofdkwartier in Keulen staan nog wat aude rallyauto\'s. Ze waren ook erg succesvol in de rallysport, wat naar eigen zeggen de reden was voor de overstap naar de formule 1.
