Nieuwe Toro Rosso moet halve seconde tijdwinst opleveren

Scuderia Toro Rosso rijdt komend weekend voor het eerst met de STR3, de op de Red Bull Racing RB4 gebaseerde nieuwe bolide. Eigenlijk moest de nieuwe auto in Turkije al debuteren, maar dat ging niet door vanwege een tekort aan reserveonderdelen na een zware testcrash van Sebastien Bourdais. In Monaco beleeft de STR3 dan wel zijn vuurdoop.

Technisch directeur Giorgio Ascanelli rekent op een significante stap voorwaarts ten opzichte van de oude auto. Ik word niet graag in speculatie over cijfers betrokken, maar deze auto moet ongeveer net zo snel zijn als de Red Bull Racing-wagen aan het begin van het seizoen was. Dat wil zeggen ongeveer drie tot vijf tienden sneller in Monaco dan onze vorige auto.

Ascanelli ziet meer voordelen dan nadelen in het debuut van de STR3 op het smalle stratencircuit van Monaco. Een debuut hier in Monte Carlo, zeker nu de weersvoorspellingen niet goed zijn, brengt risicos met zich mee, met name wat de reserveonderdelen betreft. Er zijn echter ook goede redenen om juist wel met de nieuwe auto te starten.

Ten eerste zou opnieuw uitstellen onze leercurve en ontwikkelingsprogramma in de weg staan. Ten tweede zou Monaco gewoon een stap te ver zijn geweest voor de STR2B. We hebben er nooit rekening mee gehouden om hier met de oude auto te rijden en op die manier hadden we ons nooit goed kunnen voorbereiden op de komende race.
