VT1: Raikkonen als enige onder 1:16

De eerste vrije training voor de Grand Prix van Monaco is door Kimi Raikkonen als snelste afgesloten. De Ferrari-coureur was de enige die in de eerste oefensessie minder dan 76 seconden nodig had voor het rondje in de straten van het prinsdom. Raikkonen reed een 1:15.948. De Fin werd gevolgd door het McLaren-duo Lewis Hamilton en Heikki Kovalainen, die beiden meer dan twee tienden toegaven op de regerend wereldkampioen.

Achter de top drie volgt Felipe Massa, op minder dan vier tienden van de snelste tijd. Het gat naar de man op de vijfde plek is groter. Williams-rijder Nico Rosberg is zeven tienden langzamer dan Raikkonen, maar wel een tiende sneller dan BMW Sauber-coureur Robert Kubica. Diens teamgenoot Nick Heidfeld eindigde als veertiende. De Duitser viel een kwartier voor het einde van de sessie stil in Casino.

De sessie was net hervat na een twintig minuten durende rode vlag-periode. Niet omdat een van de coureurs gecrasht was, maar omdat een putdeksel niet helemaal goed vast zat. Officials hadden ruim een kwartier nodig om het afvoerputje aan de buitenkant van bocht 1 opnieuw te bevestigen.

Heidfeld was niet de enige die problemen kende op de vrijgegeven baan. Jarno Trulli toucheerde de vangrail in Portier waardoor zijn linkerachterwiel krom kwam te staan en hij moest zijn Toyota na de tunnel langs de kant zetten. Voor Red Bull Racing-coureur David Coulthard verliep de eerste training helemaal dramatisch. De Schot parkeerde zijn auto zonder ook meer een vliegende ronde gereden te hebben in de chicane na de tunnel.

Natuurlijk zegt dit allemaal niets, vraag me af hoe zwaarbeladen Raikonnen was, of hij moet in eens ergens een seconde gevonden hebben maar goed zaterdag rond de klok van half 3 weten we meer :)

Ferrari en McLaren staan daar waar we ze verwachten, BMW valt (nog?) wat tegen. Rosberg maakt waar wat ze bij Williams zelf op voorhand zeiden.
Vettel lijkt weer verslagen door Bourdais en moet flink aan de bak om zijn status van Wunderkind te behouden.
Alonso doet het gewoon goed, maar Piquet? Ondanks meer ronden dan Renault Kopman Alonso 1,5 seconden langzamer? Begint wel een beetje zorgwekkend te worden...
