Button en Honda praten in Monaco over contractverlenging

De onderhandelingen om het aflopende contract van Jenson Button te verlengen, zijn begonnen, zo bericht The Times. De Engelsman verklaarde eerder deze maand bij Honda te willen blijven, maar volgens de krant bestaat er ook een kans dat hij weggaat om zijn droom om wereldkampioen te worden te verwezenlijken.

The Times meldt dat vandaag de gesprekken over een nieuwe verbintenis zijn begonnen. Honda-bazen Nick Fry en Ross Brawn willen Button graag behouden. Fry: We investeren ontzettend veel in de fabriek, in onze mankracht en onze middelen. Jenson heeft gezien wat we doen, weet wat onze plannen zijn en hij was daarvan onder de indruk.

Honda is echter niet verzekerd van een langer verblijf van Button. Red Bull Racing en BMW Sauber worden genoemd als mogelijke alternatieven. Een bron binnen Honda vertelde The Times dat Button maar wat graag zijn rijkelijke salaris zou inleveren voor een kans op de wereldtitel.
