McLaren blij met goed getimede overwinning

Het team van McLaren gelooft dat de overwinning van Lewis Hamilton in Monaco van cruciaal belang was om kans te houden op het kampioenschap. Door de nulscore van Ferrari-coureur Kimi Raikkonen staat de jonge Engelsman nu zelfs eerste. De zege in het prinsdom moet bovendien voor een morele opkikker zorgen bij de Britse renstal.

McLaren-directeur Martin Whitmarsh: Dit was een belangrijke overwinning. We zijn nu zes races onderweg in het kampioenschap en het werd tijd dat we ons weer eens lieten gelden, dus dit is een fantastisch resultaat. Voor alle coureurs en teams is het nog steeds heel speciaal om in Monaco te winnen en de timing was perfect voor ons.

We staan nu eerste in het coureurkampioenschap en dat is de titel die we willen halen. We hebben altijd in onszelf geloofd. We roepen al een tijdje dat de strijd beslist zal worden door het ontwikkelingstempo. We vlakken BMW Sauber nog niet uit, ze zijn sterk en snel. Maar Ferrari en wij worden vanaf nu steeds beter en als wij een snellere ontwikkelingstempo kunnen hanteren, dan kunnen we kampioen worden.
