FIA bevestigt schrappen verbod op bandenwarmers

Bandenwarmers zijn volgend jaar gewoon toegestaan. De internationale autosportbond FIA heeft ingestemd met het verzoek om de elektronische dekens die de banden op temperatuur houden niet te verbieden voor 2009, zo meldt autosport.com. Coureurs en teams waren bezorgd over de veiligheid doordat het snelheidsverschil tussen autos met koude banden en bolides die al tijdje met hun rubber rijden te groot zou zijn.

Bandenleverancier Bridgestone dacht dat daar een oplossing voor gevonden te hebben in de vorm van een minimale bandendruk, maar daar konden de teams het niet eens over worden. Honda-teambaas Ross Brawn vertelde daarover: Je kan absoluut racen zonder bandenwarmers, dat doen andere klasses ook. Maar wij leven in een zeer competitieve omgeving en daarin heb je in zon geval een minimale bandendruk nodig. We hebben geen manier gevonden om dat te introduceren. Het grote vraagstuk was hoe we dat eerlijk voor alle teams zouden kunnen regelen. De Technical Working Group wilde de bandenwarmers uiteindelijk behouden omdat ze geen oplossing voor deze kwestie wisten.

De World Motor Sport Council heeft daarom het besluit om de bandenwarmers in 2009 te verbannen terug gedraaid.
