Whitmarsh: "Formule 1 moet meer aan de fans denken"

McLaren-directeur Martin Whitmarsh is van mening dat het Formule-wereldje meer aandacht aan haar grote schare liefhebbers moet besteden. Volgens de Brit is F1 niet alleen business, maar ook zeker entertainment. We zouden meer informatie kunnen vrijgeven aan onze fans, ook tijdens de races. Daarbij kun je denken aan radioverkeer tussen de pits en de coureur en het doorgeven van data over brandstof en tactiek, verklaarde Whitmarsh.

De mensen die op dit moment in de Formule 1 actief zijn, vergeten af en toe om toenadering te blijven zoeken met het grote publiek. En we moeten niet uit het oog verliezen waarom mensen onze sport zo geweldig vinden. Dat kan heel divers zijn: sommigen volgen vooral de duels tussen de grote jongens, zoals het duel Hamilton-Raikkonen of de strijd tussen de teams McLaren en Ferrari. Maar anderen kijken vooral naar de technologische kant van onze sport of het tactische aspect tijdens een raceweekend. Hoe meer we ons best doen om deze mensen nog dichter bij de Formule 1 te betrekken, des te meer zullen ze ervan genieten.

Whitmarsh denkt dat teams niet onnodig geheimzinnig hoeven te doen over tactische beslissingen. Toch ligt het voor de hand dat openheid van zaken rivaliserende teams in de hand kan werken. Zo bleek over de radio tijdens de Turkse Grand Prix dat McLaren van plan was om Lewis Hamilton wegens flinke bandenslijtage op een 3-stop-strategie te zetten.

Openheid naar de fans betekent misschien voordelen voor de concurrenten. Hierover zegt Whitmarsh: Vanzelfsprekend willen we Ferrari niet helpen tijdens de races...! Maar toch is er een flinke cultuurshock gaande: eerst wilden we koste wat kost deze informatie geheim houden, maar inmiddels beginnen we in te zien dat deze informatie voor onze fans ongelooflijk boeiend is. En dat is wat we willen bereiken: Formule 1 is per slot van rekening geweldig entertainment.

Dat van data en tactiek zou ik dus niet doen. Als je dit door geeft kunnen andere misschien de zelfde manier gaan gebruiken...

En dat zegt het team wat je nooit radioverkeer hoort hebben, ja na de finish dat het een fantastisch resultaat is. Tot dusver hoor je voornamelijk Renault. Voor ons zou het wel leuk zijn om meer te horen. Maar of dat ook werkelijk gaat gebeuren.?!

Van mij mogen ze alle info prijs geven dat ze willen, zolang het maar vrijwillig blijft, anders komt de essentie van de sport in het geding.
