Ecclestone uit op eigendomspapieren Silverstone

Sinds de verrassende bekendmaking dat Donington Park vanaf 2010 de Britse Grand Prix overneemt van Silverstone doen veel complottheorieën de ronde. Zo zou Bernie Ecclestone alleen maar ingestemd hebben, wetende dat Donington Park de benodigde renovatie niet van de grond zal krijgen en zodoende van de kalender gehaald kan worden ten faveure van een land dat meer geld betaalt.

De Britse krant The Daily Mail heeft een andere theorie. In een poging om de race te behouden zou Silverstone een aandeel in het circuit aangeboden hebben aan Ecclestone. De commerciële baas van de Formule 1 sloeg dat af, maar het artikel meldt dat Ecclestone wel geïnteresseerd zou zijn in het volledige zeggenschap over het circuit. Het contract met Donington Park zou alleen maar bedoeld zijn om de macht over Silverstone te verkrijgen. Ecclestone is al eigenaar van Istanbul Park.
