Toyota stelt intrede KERS misschien uit

Het team van Toyota overweegt om 2009 niet meteen met het volgend jaar toegestane KERS (Kinetic Energy Recovery System) te beginnen. Dat liet Luca Marmorini, motorbaas bij de Japanse renstal, weten. Pas als het systeem van toegevoegde waarde is wordt het in de auto gemonteerd.

Marmorini in Motorsport Aktuell: Je hebt de extra 400 kilojoules aan energie die KERS oplevert niet nodig. We hoeven als team het systeem niet te gebruiken. De FIA (internationale autosportbond, red.) heeft ons volledig vrijgelaten in de keuze. Nu moeten wij bekijken of KERS onze auto sneller maakt of niet.

Maar ook de tot nu toe gebrekkige veiligheid en betrouwbaarheid van het systeem baren Toyota nog zorgen. Marmorini: We zijn heel voorzichtig bij dit soort zaken. Toyota heeft veel ervaring met deze technologie voor straatautos en daarom is de veiligheid heel erg belangrijk voor ons.
