McLaren: "Cruciale races in titelstrijd voor de boeg"

De Grands Prix van België en Italië kunnen van doorslaggevend belang zijn voor de titelstrijd. Dat denkt McLaren-directeur Martin Whitmarsh. Een week met races op Spa-Francorchamps en Monza kan het einde van alle titelaspiraties betekenen. Whitmarsh: Deze twee Grands Prix zijn van vitaal belang voor onze kampioenschapkansen.

Hij vervolgt: Iedereen van het team moet zijn zaakjes goed voor elkaar hebben, zowel mentaal als fysiek. Elke misstap die we nu maken kan op het einde zeer zwaar wegen. Deze twee races moeten we doorstaan zonder grote incidenten en met goede resultaten, zodat we in een goede uitgangspositie naar de laatste overzeese races kunnen afreizen.

McLaren heeft daarbij de luxe van de uiterst betrouwbare Mercedes-motoren. Whitmarsh: We hebben veel vertrouwen in onze collegas van Mercedes-Benz en voelen ons goed met sterke en betrouwbare krachtbronnen. De geplofte motoren van Ferrari bewijzen echter dat je niet mag verslappen. Ook onze krachtbronnen kunnen een keer stuk gaan. Gelukkig mogen onze beide coureurs nog een keer ongestraft hun motor wisselen.
