Podiumplaats ontglipt Toro Rosso-coureurs in allerlaatste ronde

Voor Scuderia Toro Rosso-coureur Sebastien Bourdais duurde de race op Spa-Francorchamps net één ronde te lang. In de voorlaatste ronde kwam hij nog als derde over start/finish. Maar tot zijn grote teleurstelling waren de weersomstandigheden zo slecht dat hij uiteindelijk ook Heidfeld en Alonso aan zich voorbij zag gaan. Voor Bourdais restte een zevende plaats. Op het laatst was het één grote loterij, zegt de Fransman.

Toen hij over de finish kwam, wist hij niet eens precies op welke plaats hij was geeindigd. De omstandigheden waren ontzettend moeilijk. Daarvoor had ik alles prima onder controle. Maar helaas bevind ik me niet in een situatie dat ik veel risicos wilde nemen. Ik was er zó dichtbij! Het is enorm frustrerend dat je vanaf de derde plek alsnog terugvalt naar de zevende, maar ondanks alles blijft dit toch een geweldig resultaat voor het team.

Teamgenoot Sebastian Vettel lag kort daarop ook op een derde positie, maar eindigde uiteindelijk als vijfde. We hebben alle reden om blij te zijn na deze race. Ik was geschokt toen ik Heidfeld en Alonso op hun intermediates voorbij zag scheuren. Whooosh, en het was gebeurd. Iedereen zegt dat Eau Rouge en Blanchimont volgas te nemen zijn, maar met een aantal regendruppels erbij, dan is de situatie compleet anders, legt de Duitser uit.

Ik was uiterst tevreden met de auto vandaag. Onze race-pace is degelijk. De teams voor ons liggen nog een dimensie voor op ons, maar we hebben opnieuw goede stappen voorwaarts gemaakt en de komende races zullen we ons potentieel opnieuw tentoon spreiden, zegt Vettel.

Sebastian Vettel staat met dertien WK-punten twaalfde in de stand, Bourdais bezet met slechts vier punten de zeventiende stek. Scuderia Toro Rosso staat momenteel achtste, gelijk met het team van Williams.
