Toyota-coureurs zien kansen op punten voor thuispubliek

Het Japanse team van Toyota deed tot zaterdagmiddag toen de kwalificatieplaatsen werden verdeeld erg goed mee in de top drie van de tijdentabel. Op vrijdag en zaterdagochtend was er regelmatig een Toyota-bolide terug te vinden in de top vijf. Hoe anders was dat na afloop van de kwalificatie op het Fuji Speedway-circuit in hun thuisland. Coureurs Timo Glock en Jarno Trulli moesten het doen met een positie buiten de top vijf. Trulli kwalificeerde zich als zevende, Glock die in de eerste kwalificatiesessie nog erg snel was wist zich als achtste te kwalificeren.

Jarno Trulli na zijn kwalificatie: "We hebben het hier best goed gedaan vind ik. In het eerste deel van de kwalificatie moest ik wat aanpassingen doen aan mijn bolide, gelukkig kreeg ik die op tijd voor elkaar. Het zorgde ervoor dat ik de balans weer terug kreeg in de auto en ik kon weer snellere tijden rijden."

"In de tweede kwalificatiesessie was ik vierde en mijn teamgenoot Timo was vijfde. Het toont aan hoe snel wij hier zijn op dit circuit. Natuurlijk moesten we in de laatste sessie flink bijtanken en door de zwaardere bolide kreeg ik niet echt meer snelle tijden op de monitor. We moeten morgen keihard vechten voor onze fans. Dat zijn we verplicht. Ik heb er vertrouwen in."

Teamgenoot Timo Glock was vrijdag tijdens de tweede vrije training nog de snelste geweest op de Fuji Speedway. De regen in de nacht voorafgaand aan de kwalificatie heeft voor de Duitser verpest, zo zegt hij zelf: "De grip was verdwenen na de regen van vannacht. Dat heeft ons als team absoluut niet geholpen. Uiteindelijk moeten we natuurlijk wel tevreden zijn met de afloop van deze kwalificatie. Het resultaat is uiteindelijk nog wel uitstekend te noemen."

"Vooral mijn eerste kwalificatiesessie was fantastisch. Ik was de snelste. Dat gaf mij een erg goed gevoel. Helaas staan we nu iets verder achteraan dan we hadden verwacht. Jammer is dat, maar ik zie hier veel kansen om in te halen op dit circuit. Dat gaat zeker lukken, die fans die ons toejuichen hier, het is fantastisch. Er zijn hier zoveel Toyota-fans, we hebben twee auto's in de top tien en er is een grote kans dat wij punten gaan scoren."

Tot op heden scoorde het team van Toyota 46 punten, vijf minder dan het rivaliserende team van Renault.
