Kubica: "Hamilton en Massa hebben veel meer te verliezen"

BMW Sauber-coureur Robert Kubica hoopt gebruik te kunnen maken van zijn status van outsider voor de wereldtitel. De druk op de andere twee kandidaten, Ferrari-coureur Felipe Massa en McLaren-coureur Lewis Hamilton, neemt alleen maar toe en Kubica kan in de schaduw van dat tweetal voor een verrassing zorgen. Op die manier profiteerde Kimi Raikkonen vorig jaar ook van het gestuntel van McLaren.

Kubica: De twee coureurs die voor mij staan hebben veel meer te verliezen dan dat ik te winnen heb. Natuurlijk zou het geweldig zijn om met een snelle auto te strijden voor de pole en overwinning, dan zou ik echt nog een kans maken. Maar het is geen geheim dat we qua snelheid wat terrein hebben prijsgegeven. In Japan waren ook Renault en Toyota sneller dan ons, wat het voor mij extra zwaar maakt om de concurrentie met Ferrari en McLaren aan te gaan.

De enige manier voor ons om kans te houden op de titel was met constant presteren en betrouwbaarheid. Wat dat betreft hebben we een geweldig seizoen achter de rug. We hebben daar ook grote stappen in gemaakt. Vorig jaar hadden we veel technische problemen, maar dit seizoen helemaal niet. Dat is de reden dat we nog meedoen om het kampioenschap. De uitgangspositie is niet ideaal, maar ik ben een van de drie titelkandidaten en dat is met name te danken aan de honderd procent betrouwbaarheid van onze auto.

Kubica heeft niets te verliezen, maar als hij serieus kampioen wil worden staat hij wel behoorlijk onder druk. Zelfs in het voor hem meest ideale geval (als Hamilton en Massa niet meer scoren) moet hij nog steeds 12 punten scoren. Om die 12 punten in 2 races te halen moet hij flink aanpoten. Daar zou hij redelijkerwijs toch knap wat druk voor moeten voelen.

Hij zal in beide races moeten hopen of fouten/pech van zowel Massa als Hamilton. Op eigen kracht kan hij met de BMW niet voor de andere 2 komen.

Zelfde kan gezegd worden van Kimi vorig jaar en toch flikte hij het. De druk lag toen ook volledig bij Alonso en Hamilton. Tuurlijk moet Kubica dan presteren, maar als hij het niet red, neemt niemand hem dat kwalijk. In tegenstelling tot Massa en Hamilton. Als zij het niet worden krijgen ze alle kritiek over zich heen.
