Kovalainen: "Ik heb geen reden om me niet goed te voelen"

McLaren-coureur Heikki Kovalainen sluit zondag zijn eerste jaar bij McLaren af. Een bewogen seizoen met een pole position en een zege, maar ook met veel pech, een zware crash in Spanje en een grote achterstand op teamgenoot Lewis Hamilton. Bovendien sijpelden een tijdje terug berichten door dat de Fin zich niet goed voelde met zijn rol binnen de Britse renstal.

Het tegendeel is echter waar, Kovalainen voelt zich geweldig bij McLaren. Dit was mijn eerste jaar bij een topteam en volgend jaar moet het beter. Dat gaan we in de winter bespreken. Maar iemand zei laatst dat er ergens stond dat ik ontevreden zou zijn bij McLaren, dat onderschrijf ik helemaal niet. Ik heb geen reden om me niet goed te voelen bij dit team. Ik zit in de beste auto en de potentie is aanwezig om te winnen.

Ik voel me op mijn gemak bij McLaren. Ik heb niets om negatief over te zijn of om me voor te schamen. Ik heb mijn eerste pole position behaald, mijn eerste zege geboekt, al met al een positief jaar. In de winterperiode kijken we wat we moeten doen om het volgend jaar nog beter te doen. Ik zie geen specifiek gebied waar ik me radicaal op moet verbeteren, gewoon de stijgende lijn doortrekken en op elk aspect stappen voorwaarts zetten.
